3 Money Fears and How to Shift Them

This weekend I did something despite my own fears…

I got onstage and presented a very personal and traumatic story that I wrote and memorized to a live in-person audience at a theater in Los Angeles. I’ll share more about that talk in a future blog post.

For now, I want to talk about how we all have fears and how to shift them to achieve the growth and successes we want in our life.

Fears are just little or big reminders of where your mind feels like you need protection.

We are built with fears in order to either not get eaten by a wild animal or to not eat a poisonous plant. Fears are in our DNA to make sure we don’t die.

The reason we have money fears is because money is emotional and it feels like it’s tied to our survival. If money wasn’t emotional and tied into our survival, then we wouldn’t fight about it, and it wouldn’t be the #1 reason most couples get divorced.

Because fears are all about protection, then the first thing to do whenever or whatever fears come up is to acknowledge the fears.

Tell yourself - I hear you fear. You want me to protect me from __________ (here’s where you get to name what you believe it’s trying to protect you from.)

Then, let the fear know that you are open and curious to take some action to get out of your anxiety because action is the antidote to anxiety.

Below are some ways to take action to get out of some of the most common money fears I hear from clients and member of my Financial Freedom for Creatives Club.

Fear #1 - What if I run out of money or can’t pay my rent, food, bills…and eventually my mind tells me that I’ll be homeless?!

This is the most common fear. Our minds tend to worry and tell us stories about the unknown. So, the easiest way to get out of this fear is to make a plan either on your own or with a financial planner or coach, like me!

Fear #2 - Fear of spending and I’ll explain why this goes along with it - what if I make too much and have to pay more in taxes?

This seems strange if you don’t have the fear of spending or making too much and having to pay more in taxes, but I have seen the fear of spending a lot! I’ve had clients and even family members keep hundreds of thousands of dollars in a no or low interest savings account. Some of them have kept OVER the FDIC limit. (In most first world countries, there is a certain amount that is insured by the government, so you don’t lose it. In the U.S. that amount is $250,000.) This is how I know that this is an irrational fear. You fear investing that money but you don’t fear being over the insurance limit and having the possibility of losing anything that’s over the limit? This doesn’t make too much sense. How to shift this fear is to align your spending with your values.

Now, the fear of spending is the same fear as paying more in taxes because what I’ve seen in common with people who have these two fears is always wanting to do the “right thing.” If you have this fear, you’ve probably been told that if you owe a lot of taxes or if you’re spending too much, then you’re not doing the “right thing.” If you’re someone who is always trying to do the “right thing” and be “ultra or super responsible,” then you most likely are afraid to spend money, especially on yourself, and you’re also going to fear making more, in case you have to pay more in taxes.

Recently, I’ve had a few clients tell me that their accountant just told them that last year or even this year was their best year ever. Yay! But wait…before we cue the confetti, they then say…but that means I’m going to have to pay more in taxes!!??!! They panic. While taxes may feel scary, I want to remind you of something that a member of FFCC just reminded herself. She says she heard Oprah say that paying more in taxes just shows that she’s made a lot! So, first celebrate that you’re making more and to remind yourself that that’s the goal! This all comes down to worth, so it’s about really working on your own self worth. You are worthy of making so much more money that you now are in a higher tax bracket! Celebrate that! You are also worthy of spending money on yourself, especially on what aligns with your values!

Fear #3 - What will people think? What will my family think of my dreams, my desires? What will people think of me either making too much money (for some) or making too little money (and they’re all looking down and judging me)? If I make a lot of money, is that “showing off” or being “icky”/greedy/selfish [insert any word here that you’ve told yourself]?

For this one, I wanted to share a story my friend and Human Design Business Coach, Danielle Eyman, wrote in her newsletter recently (shared with her permission, and edited for length and clarity):

My story starts in Sedona- where I hosted a 4 day in person retreat with one of my long time private clients. We use our in person time to dig deep into the subconscious to transmute shadow and move into gift.

As we sat in our meditative state a fear was revealed I had not considered before.

This particular fear came up and asked to be noticed.

As I sat with the fear, and really played with it- I saw it for the Truth.

But as we rewired and healed this wound, I knew what my next offering to my community would be.

Being in Sedona, we went hiking the next morning and sat in silence overlooking Bell Rock and the majesty that surrounds Yavapi Vista. The fear came back, this time in the disguise of a tourist visiting from France.

We were sitting on a rock minding our own business, talking about money and investing and the dreams we had around the freedom that money allows for our lives.

It really hit me this past retreat- people just don't get to live like this. Traveling and calling it work, being in communion with Soul aligned clients who feel like family, waking up everyday knowing that with faith all things are possible. What is everyday work for me is only a dream for most.

The tourist came up to us and broke into our conversation- she said “I’m sorry to interrupt, and this will be a little bit rude to say but I am going to say it anyway.”

Well right then I knew not to engage. So very unlike me, I stayed quiet.

She went onto to say “Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world with fantastic views and you all are talking about the subject of money- which is the opposite energy of where we are right now”

She went on and on talking about how disgusting money is, asking us how we could even bring that topic to a beautiful place like Sedona and telling (not asking) us to stop talking about such filthy dirty things.

Because we said nothing- there was no defense on our end, no justification, no argument, nothing from us, she kept going until the frequency in her throat stopped.

I could feel a little bit of shame come through her last words- “I told you it would be rude, but I had to say something.”

As she walked away everyone looked at me- dumbfounded. Shocked to be in the middle of a private conversation and to be interrupted by a stranger who felt the urgent need to shame and belittle us for talking about something she is so personally offended by.

Money.

I knew right then- that woman was the representation of a frequency of fear around a subject that has held so much charge around it. That was the moment I knew, even deeper, the work I do is needed even more.

There is no shame in wanting more money for more freedom. In fact that is the only reason we see a need and a want for more.

I would venture to say that the reason this tourist was able to experience the beauty of Sedona IRL all the way from France was because she used money to get her there. Seems to me she was able to put aside her disdain for money long enough to book her airfare, lodging and restaurant reservations in order to experience something important to her.

My work is not for the woman who is proud to claim her fear around money. It is for the ones who recognize this fear and want to use this life to prove that fear of money is an illusion from our ancestors. It is for the one who is done allowing money to run her decisions and ready to trust her Higher Self with her moves.

Which brings me full circle to this fear we must dissolve.

Money is not to be feared- our fear of showing off with our money is the real culprit.

The real fear we have is in allowing money to be the reason we don’t get to experience what we know we need and want.

My clients have money. They know what to use their money for. They carry no shame in using this currency to make what they want what they need.

But what most of them fear is that in having the money and using it for what they want, they will be shamed and ridiculed for showing off with it.

Marketing is a tool we use to show off. We show off who we are, what we have accomplished, and how we have helped others accomplish. How can we market effectively if we are scared it will come across as bragging or showing off?

Does the fear of what others will think about you keep you from marketing in all your glory?

The fear of showing off is real and it can keep you from your birthright of abundance for years if we don't address this now.

If I had waited until everyone around me was comfortable with my take on Wealth Energy, abundance being my birthright, or commanding more for my life- my family wouldn't be back home, I would still be in debt and hundreds of women all over the world would not using the Wealth Codes to see their way into a life of more freedom.

Because I overcame the fear of showing off, bragging and made no apology for the prices I exchange for my value- we have seen our clients create over $9M in cash in less than 4 years.

I have done the work that so many avoid in our world. I went first, dove in and reclaimed the power I was giving away to money so that you would be able to.

What could be possible if the fear of ruffling feathers was just gone?

Without that fear your marketing would show up inside an algorithm that connected you directly with the ones who need permission to start taking action against whatever holds them back.

You have something the world needs NOW- it is time to get out there and show off what you have inside your life that they want.

It may feel like showing off to you, but to them it's an answered prayer.

I’m in the business of answering prayers- and if that means I need to show off what I am capable of to do that… then I’m here for it.

Prayers are answered through people, and you are a person who has an answer for someone you don't even know. That is powerful.

Own it, show it off and let yourself be seen.
